START TO INVEST AND EDUCATE YOURSELF

Happy new year to you and I believe you are grateful that you have made it this year. It’s been a month already and I know that almost everyone had an issue with 2020 and the pandemic made it worse.

personally, I did not achieve many of the things I planned to achieve but I got some things I did not plan to have but, nonetheless, made me happy and I will forever be grateful. Especially when one considers that made me happy that I did not plan to have and I will forever be grateful for the life, keeping in mind that many people across the world lost their lives.

So today I just want to share with you one of the things that I have listed on my goals this year, investing and educating myself.

Most of the times we are happy when people invest in us, but we don’t really plan to do such things for ourselves. I can assure you that if you start investing and educating yourself today your life will never be the same again.

There are so many things you can invest and educate yourself in this year. You can start or go back to school and pursue that dream course you have always wanted; you can invest in business or read some books that will change your life. You can also invest in your health by exercising and eating right, mentoring a young person on spiritual or academics stuff and that will help you become a great leader.

 However, you can start improving many other things you would love to see yourself doing and feel good after achieving them.

There are many ways that you can always educate yourself each and every day. In this modern technology era it is easy to teach yourself through YouTube. Many people are advancing through that site, if you want to learn about singing, cooking, writing, fashion designing, academics, history and all the things you would love to know, you can get it there.

This does not mean you should go to school, if you have the money it’s okay but you learn more from advance your self-development also by reading a good book.

 Below I will list down just five reasons why you should invest and educate yourself.

1.It helps you stay relevant.

In the 21st century, things are changing every day. Our lifestyle has changed compared to the way it used to be. This simply means we need to be updating our skills regularly and be alert on what’s happening around the world. Being in the field of information technology, this is a reality that I face every day. Many of the techniques I learned a few years ago are no longer in use today. Therefore, if you want to stay relevant, there is no other choice; you must constantly upgrade yourself. You must pay the price of learning and re-learning.

2. It is easy to notice an opportunity.

 The fast-changing nature of the world not only has a negative side but also a positive one: it opens new possibilities. Many things that weren’t possible before become possible today. For instance, it’s now possible to have a location-independent (and even time-independent) career. You don’t have to stay at the same place all the time. Seeing such opportunities, however, requires you to keep learning. You must keep yourself up to date with the new way of doing things.

3. It satisfies you.

Self-education gives you not just external rewards but also internal ones. It feels good to reach your full potential. It gives you inner satisfaction to be the best person that you can be.

4.It increases your capacity to help people.

Upgrading yourself will benefit not only you but also those around you. Why? Because it increases your capacity to help people. The fact is, you can only help others with what you have. So the more you have, the more you can help. Some people find it easier to spend money on things like meals than on their self-education. Don’t be that kind of person. Instead, make your self-education a priority. You might not feel the benefits right away, but believe what Benjamin Franklin said: An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.

5.It boosts one’s confidence

Investing in yourself is a great way to build your self-confidence and self-worth and acquire knowledge. Read, or perhaps I should rephrase, listen to an audio book once a week. Books or audio books are an infinite resource to building knowledge and expertise in any area. If I don’t manage to read or listen a book, I supplement my learning and curiosity with podcasts. Listening to a 30-minute podcast before going to bed or when driving or when working out in the gym or just taking a walk is a great way to make effective use of time whilst still learning.

In a nutshell those are just the few advantages one can achieve after investing and educating oneself. However, attending seminars and workshops to expand your knowledge and skills also gives you the invaluable opportunity to network with those who are like-minded. Education is more than just an investment in your career. It is an investment in your growth, awareness, and identity. Constantly learning will give you that competitive edge.

EVER HEARD OF PrEP? ITS NOT HIV VACCINE, BUT CAN SAVE YOU

It has been a while since I last posted an article. But It’s all good and I am so excited that I am finally at it again.

A month ago, a colleague from my office asked me to attend a certain media training on his behalf. I was excited to be part of the training because I knew it had something to do with health and as a professional journalist, I sensed it was an opportunity to learn further how to report on the subject professionally.

It was hence an honor to be part of the group and talk about HIV and AIDS because HIV and AIDS remains a major health concern in Malawi with new infections reaching 33,000 in 2019 (according to the Malawi National Strategic Plan for HIV and AIDS 2020-2025). Thankfully, there is a biomedical intervention called oral PrEP that can greatly help us reduce new infections

To begin, I first came across the word PrEP in 2015 back when I was pursuing my journalism diploma during a lesson on HlV and AIDS reporting class. In case you have no idea of what Prep is, then this article is for you.

PrEP is a short form for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis –a form of ARV drugs but one consumed by HIV negative persons to prevent the acquisition of HIV.

As I have learnt, taken on a daily basis, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV acquisition from sex or injection drug use but is much less effective when it is not taken consistently.

But prEP is not a vaccine. Its designed to be taken when one is at risk of acquiring HlV prior to exposure. If one’s risk of getting HlV infection becomes low because of changes in their lives,one may choose to stop taking prEP.

Perhaps, the question might be just how good is the drug? Well, pretty good, if you trust the scientists. According to Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, studies have shown that PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when taken daily. The margin for error, for lack of a better word, apparently, is that slim.

Among people who inject drugs, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV by at least 74% when taken daily. However, PrEP does not protect against STIs or prevent pregnancies, so don’t get carried away. It is quite important therefore to use PrEP as a combination prevention package with other existing interventions such as condoms and VMMC.

There is a bit of history about the use of PrEP in Malawi that I learnt as well at the training. PrEP was provided to HIV-negative people as part of demonstration studies in two districts of Lilongwe and Blantyre.

In Lilongwe, the study was implemented by Lighthouse Trust, which targeted adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). In Blantyre, the study was led by Pakachere Institute for Health Development and Communication and the study participants were female sex workers. As of now, PrEP has not been rolled out nationally in Malawi.

I was so curious about this topic and I decided to talk to someone who could testify about this and luckily I found one.

 A sex worker, whose real name I shall conceal but shall only identify as Sharon, from Area 25 residential township in Lilongwe, has been a regular user of the drug and speaks highly of its effectiveness.

She told me: “I was introduced to this drug last year and I was part of a study to find out if the drug really works. So first of all they tested my HIV status to find if I was negative then I was given the drug and instructions that I should follow.”

Sharon, however, further explained to me that during the first week of taking the drug, she experienced some side effects like nausea, vomiting, headache and when she visited the hospital she was told it is normal and there was nothing wrong with it.

“I was taking the pill each and every day while doing my work every night, without protection sometimes, with different men and when time came for me to get tested again if the drug really worked I was found negative and that proved the drug worked. Since I am at risk of getting HIV with the work I do, I have been taking the pill everyday ever since to protect myself from the virus. I encourage everyone who knows they are at risk of getting HIV to visit a near clinic and ask about prep and they will be helped,” she recalled.

Although praising PrEP’s effectiveness in preventing HIV, Sharon is quick to remind everyone that as a sex worker it does not protect her from STDs or pregnancy hence she is forced to use some contraceptive methods including condoms.

PrEP was endorsed in the National Policy in 2018, however, the PrEP guidelines have yet to be approved.

AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition Fellow Chisomo Chaweza said the Constitution, under the bill of rights, mandates Malawi to make accessible health services to its people. The delay in approving PrEP guidelines directly delays the roll out of PrEP, an intervention that other African countries such as Kenya, eSwatini and South Africa are already implementing at larger scale to achieve the goal of eliminating HIV by 2030.

He said: “I call for the speedy approval of the PrEP guidelines so that we can protect many lives. This is especially important now, as we are faced with covid-19, another pandemic that has claimed many lives. Let us not lose the gains we have already made on HIV. Access to HIV prevention services is a human rights issue.”

A lot of people when it comes to dressing well they think of expensive clothes and spending more money but that’s not the deal always. Dressing smart and in a smart way is very important in one’s daily business. For that reason you need to make sure you cover yourself nicely and be presentable according to what you represent.

I know we have people who just don’t care about their dressing, whether it’s smart or not as long as their are okay. Today I want to share with you the importance of dressing smart and nice everyday.

The clothes you wear and the way you groom yourself will change the way other people hear what you say. It will subconsciously tell them if you’re like them or if you’re different. It will determine whether they listen or ignore you, trust or distrust.

It definitely tells a lot about a person and usually the first impression a person gets from you sticks in their mind forever and I have personally experienced this.

True story: one day I was around town with my two friends at a supermarket and I noted that some guy was following me and eventually he stopped me and said: “hey, your face looks familiar, are you a model?

To be honest I was not really surprised because I dressed up and was looking all fresh. I told him am not a model but I love to dress up and look nice all the time. For your own information from that 3 minutes chat,few weeks later I was introduced to some directors of some company and i ended up getting a job without interviews. The directors just saw me and said we are trusting you and I told myself to work harder behind my smart dressing.

My emphasis is, you need to watch what you dress always. For people will address you according to the way you are dressing up.

Nevertheless, I believe we dress to please ourselves in the first place and before anyone else.

2. Dressing well allows one to gain self-confidence. This is an important aspect of communication. Good communication skills can be obtained easily if one decides to choose what to wear wisely.

Although I believe that clothes reveal a one’s personality. I believe there is no excuse for someone to treat another badly for their clothing.

When you dress smart you can even feel it that you are comfortable and ready to face the day.

IT’S OKAY TO LAMENT ON CHANGED PLANS DURING THIS PANDEMIC.

So many things have changed in a minute and everyone around the world is trying so hard to adapt to this new norm. Not really loving the processes as it was never anticipated. It’s just something that has got everyone by surprise. No one will even ask what I am talking about, for all of us have been affected by the new Novel virus.

It’s okay to lament

News broke forth on the 4th of April, 2019 and the announcement of the first reported case was made in my country, Malawi. Since then we have had some other cases being reported as well and things are getting worse globally. Sitting down yesterday, I was contemplating on the whole situation, I was so afraid because I felt like I am at war. It is really scary and I know many of us are in this mode. With lots of questions and less or no answers at all.

I keep on feeling like I am at war and battling with someone I can’t see but in my mind knowing that the enemy is so strong, that the whole world can stand still and allow the men and women in white coats to fight and not with guns and missiles but a very unusual way of fighting, at times feeling like I will hide from nothing. But hearing the casualties in this war across the globe, it’s something else.

The worst part is we don’t really know when the war is going to come to an end. This is World War. I am not fighting alone but worldwide there has been protocols designed in every Country and the nurses and doctors are on the front line, our new superheroes. Who ever thought of that.

Myself I do business and things. My business involves traveling across the boarder and now I can no longer go for orders as traveling is restricted and since many of my customers’ businesses are affected too, it’s becoming hard for them to pay me. Everyone is anxious as no one knows when everything will come back to normal.


Just like everyone else I was so excited for this year and hey it’s vision 2020, I had plans to grow and invest. But then Boom! COVID-19 decides to disturb all those plans, we pray its going to be defeated soon. Two of my friends have cancelled their weddings, ten people I know have lost their jobs just because of the virus. Each and every day new cases of infected people around the world are being reported. Schools, Shops, and even Churches are closed, as one way of defeating this enemy. Businesses are not making profits.

We started seeing restrictions on travel and business, and many suspected cases were advised to be in quarantine. Everyday News since has been filled with gloom, devastation has been carried in the air to our homes and the internet has been jam-packed with information of this enemy.


Regular life feels like eternity ago. Though our country has been had the cases in less than a month and it’s not long ago when the restrictions were brought forward. Its crazy how fast everything we know has changed, and its crazy how quickly weve all adapted to the changes. This have really changed in a blink of an eye.

Consider the conversations you now have with family and friends these days. When was the last time you left home or pass by town without washing hands? Everything is different now, and it happened almost overnight. We are in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, but its more than just that. Its a worldwide tragedy, one whose story is only beginning to unfold.
Its not just health. Its economics. Its politics. Its entertainment and lifestyle. Its society. Its everything.

Theres one thing we all share. Every one of us has lost something to Coronavirus. And its okay to lament over it. You may have changed your wedding plans, plans to start or finish School, plans for business, travel or attending your favorite concert. It’s okay to lament because it’s something you never expected.

I was worried because I didn’t get orders for my business and I was full of unpleasantness that I will be broke and won’t be able to keep up but when I read in the news and see The numbers of people that have died to this virus, I was like please, I really MUST be GRATEFUL.

We have lost People because of this pandemic, it’s okay to feel sad for the changed but let’s have hope that we are going to make it together and everything will be okay. Not so long from now. If you are afraid and worried about changed plans, I say it’s okay to feel sad but one thing that I know is we are going to go through this and I know our God is watching over us.

Let’s not forget to wash our hands frequently, observe social distance, use sanitizer and cover your mouth and nose with a mask.

Sliding between crisp, clean sheets is one of the best feelings in the world. There’s something about being in a fresh environment that gives you peace of mind. It’s similar to the feeling you get when you walk into an organized room versus a cluttered space, but the effects are magnified because the sheets are also touching your skin, employing another one of your senses. You will agree with me on how fresh and relaxed you feel when your beddings are just coming from laundry. I must say it is breath taking.

Since last week, because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, I have been working from home and I must say I have noted a couple of things in my house that needs to be taken care of and one of them was my beddings.

To be honest I don’t like to be in a messy environment starting from where I sleep. Most of us don’t really change beddings frequently, some people even takes months to wash their beddings which is not a good hygiene.

When I say please we need to wash and change our beddings once in two weeks at least am not saying you should have plenty of beddings,if you can afford it’s okay but if you can’t just wash and use the same.

A recent poll by the National Sleep Foundation shed further light on this theory. Up to 98% of people reported that being in a clean bedroom was important to sleep quality, and more than half of the respondents said that sheets with a fresh scent also mattered.

Months ago I used to change my beddings after a month and I told myself to improve at least every once in 2 weeks.Its about our bodies and our health so we need to take care.I don’t know about you but when it comes to my health:I don’t joke around.

The survey of more than 2,000 people revealed that more than half of Britons sleep in dirty sheets – and women are guilty of not changing the bed linen regularly. “Our bodies shed millions of skin cells each day, many of which rub off in our sleep and are deposited in our beds. In addition to skin cells, our bodies also secrete fluids, sweat and oils during a long night’s sleep,” Fox said. “While unsavoury in themselves, these deposits mostly pose a problem as they are all deliciously appealing for dust mites.

The droppings of microscopic creatures such as dust mites are laden with allergens which when inhaled can trigger asthma and rhinitis and may also worsen eczema.

The research commissioned by home retailer Dunelm Mill, found just two in five of us change our sheets weekly – in line with the standards of TV’s cleaning gurus Kim and Aggie. A further 36 per cent perform the task fortnightly, while 17 per cent admitted changing dirty sheets just once a month or even less frequently. Meanwhile, six per cent of houseproud people stripped the sheets more than once a week, one per cent of people admitted they were changed just once a year, while three per cent had no idea. Women were revealed to be the more lax of the two sexes when it came to bedroom hygiene. More than half do not clean their sheets weekly with 12 per cent changing their sheets once a month and one per cent admitting to never changing them at all. But 40 per cent of men, on the other hand, managed a weekly change, and a further eight per cent did it even more frequently than that. I can talk all day but if you don’t like changing and washing your beddings please make a descision to start doing so because it’s good for your hygiene.If you already do that and that’s good for you and keep it up.

I know almost everyone is being home because of the Pandemic.You can make descision to start taking care of where you sleep and make sure you have clean beddings.

HOW IS IT GOING THIS COVID-19 SEASON?

As far as I know, different organisations safe across the world, including in my home Malawi, have been donating different medical appliances like hand sanitizer, face marks, testing kits just to make sure everyone is protected from infection.
Among the countries that have registered the virus, my country has just registered four cases for the first time on 4thApril. Two weeks ago, Malawian President Arthur Peter Mutharika implemented some measures to ensure the public’s safety including closing all schools as well as encouraging companies to let their staff work from home.

Malawi is also praying for total healing of the whole universe that we all love.
I eavesdropped some young ladies in the bus when I was going home from work, saying: “You know what girl, closing the colleges will not do us good and some of us will end up getting pregnant. What else can we do if we are not going to school?”. One of the girls queried.
In response the friend looked to her friend saying this virus has hit us hard, you can’t even venture into business because it has also affected the business sector. We are really going to be sluggish and I don’t want to get pregnant and they all laughed.
And I thought about what was said and I agreed that the virus has really hit us hard in many ways but that should not let us go down as it is going down.
Since the first case as of now, we have lost many people worldwide and everyone is afraid. But we have hope that together we can fight and end this pandemic.
To my fellow young people who are home back from different colleges or workplaces across the world; please you can use this time to reflect on other aspects of your life.
I am sure you can find one of few things you can do to change the lives of other around you instead of just sitting around moping and complaining. I gathered out some few things that can help someone during this season while being isolated from the different activities that we are used to.
*Start a journal or blog. Sure, it can be about the coronavirus, but it could also be about a specific interest from chess to cheese.

*If it won’t bother your neighbours, dust off that old instrument and practice.

*Watch all the really long movies you’ve avoided until now.

*Face masks, moisturizer, oh my! Treat yourself to a 10-step skin care routine you don’t have time for during a normal work week.

*Have a roommate meeting about how to be more considerate of one other, especially while you will likely be spending more time together. Bring baked goods.
Bake those goods.
*Try out at-home aerobics or yoga videos. Consider downloading a fitness app with curated workout playlist
*Take time to reflect: What have you accomplished in the last year? What goals are you setting for yourself in the next year?

*Write a short story or get started on that novel.
Finally get around to fixing that broken door knob and loose tile or cleaning scuffed up walls.
*Go on a health kick and learn how to cook new recipes with ingredients you may not be using already, from miso to tahini.
Make a list of things for which you are grateful.
*Work on your financial planning, such as exploring whether to refinance your loan or ways to save more money.
*Stop procrastinating and do your income taxes.
*Rearrange your furniture to make it seem like your home is a totally different space.
*Memorize the periodic table. You never know when that will come in handy.
*Apply for a new job. You have remote work experience now.
*Pray to God, he can hear us when we cry.
And one of my favourite bloggers in his article said it’s tough to stay motivated during this time. The longer social distancing will last, the harder it will get. But we must go on.
What’s the other option? If you think about it, there’s only one viable option in life. And that’s moving forward no matter what.
No one said it was easy to get through this pandemic. Most countries are not even close to the peak. We’re still weeks away. So, let’s get motivated to overcome this.

ITS QUARTER PAST 2020, HOW IS IT?

Time after time, I sit down and evaluate the things that I have been up to. For the past two years, I was not partaking in many activities that would involve me socializing with different people and that was by choice.
I told myself that this year, in each and every month, I should learn something new. And I have included that in the list of my 2020 goals. I have told myself to learn more from different people who are more advanced in years and even those younger than I am.
It took me time to get myself together and see how I can strategise and help myself on how I can learn better. The first step, I told myself to attend different conferences or workshops that will help me grow. I have also told myself to work up very early in the morning; I am working so hard to accomplish this because I am not a morning person.

Last month I attended a workshop organized by Maphuziro 265, which took place on 29 February, at Latitude Hotel, in Lilongwe. I must say this is one of the best workshops that I have attended in a long time.
First of all, when I saw the flier of the show on my friend’s status, I told myself I would participate and when I asked around, I was convinced that it was a must attend conference. The reason I got attracted to this workshop was the theme which said; “Young Professional Women’s Mixer.” This is an event that brings together young professional women. According to Tendai of Maphuziro 265, there is a huge gap between them (professional women and novices) in terms knowledge and skills, and we lack spaces where we can come together as ladies, put our titles aside and learn from each other as sisters.

When I saw the line-up of the speakers and the topics, I told my friends about this event; and none of them seemed interested but that did not stop me from registering. Fast forward to the event, I must say this was one of the workshops I have ever attended. I loved the sessions and the speakers themselves.

The first to speak was Chisomo Kumwenda, a lawyer by profession, who talked about labour laws and Gender equality in the work place. She tackled on issues that I see as normal but they are very wrong. For example, she said young women should never apologize to anyone about their dreams because they can do anything and be happy.

She also talked about unwanted sexual favours, sexual harassment at work place. There are many times when a woman can get a job because of her potential and qualifications but some men may want to take an advantage, by dangling an opportunity for work or promotion in exchange with sex.
“You don’t need to lower yourself for that. If something like that happens you need to talk to the authorities. If you don’t trust them, talk to someone who can help you even if they are not from your working place, make sure you speak out.”

The second speaker, who was my favourite, was Ngabaghila Chatata. What I loved about her was the fact that she is a pastor’s wife, she holds a higher position at her work place and she is co-founder of an agribusiness company with her husband. I was so enthused to hear a story from a 40-year-old lady, with four children, and doing so much in this country. I must admit that I kept on saying; “this woman is blessed and her husband and family must be blessed.”

The last one to speak was Lusungu and I just treasured her vibe. Every time she was speaking, she could demonstrate so that we get whatever she was saying clearly. She talked about social media and networking. Through her, I learnt that we have opportunities around us and we just have to learn how to play our cards. People are making money on social media while others just use it as a platform to have fun.
Big up to Tendai and the whole team of Mamphunziro 265 for bringing up such good things. We really need more of these because I was tired of workshops that talked about the same things. I think we need something that can transform young people to be better and be responsible citizens.

We are young today and we should work for tomorrow, so let’s make good decisions on how we are going to transform our lives for the better. As for me, I won’t wait for somebody to give me an opportunity but I have promised myself to invest in myself and create an opportunity where it seems impossible.
Learn from other people. It really helps.

Be Grateful!

Look now am checking at my calendar and I am surprised it is the 1st of March, Gosh it’s been four weeks and I haven’t posted anything on my blog. Anyway thanks for coming in to check this, I trust you are doing quite well.

I am doing great and this four weeks that I was silent here, alot has happened but most of all I just wanted to say I am grateful for this life of mine.

You know how most of the times we feel intimidated with everything happening arround our lives causing us to forget the most important things that are happening everyday in our lives.

As I said that alot of things has happened, one of the happenings was a realese of my new single, I do sing in case you didn’t know. This song is so special to me and am so glad that it is out there and so grateful to God that I was able to do that song.

The song is titled ‘Missing you’ and it is a tribbute for my friend Farai Mambelera who passed in 2017, may her soul continue to rest in peace. This girl was just like a sister to me and really learnt alot from her especially my prayer life. She was more than a best friend and words fail me to express our friendship and sisterhood so I thought of doing a song just to appreciate and express the union we had.

Some may argue to say, why doing a song for someone who is no longer with us, but then I feel like there are things many of us don’t want to imagine them happening and death is one of those things.

So I did the song just to appreciate  her. To me she was an awesome friend and she was a good friend to many people. Farai loved people and was loved by many including her dear family.

Then in the month of February I turned 25, that was on 10th. I really feel good and happier. I don’t have alot to say but I am grateful especially for the people that I love and my closest friends who are always there to support me.

I really had a great time on my birthday night, in the morning hours of that day I was at work and we had a supper at mugg and bean restraunt at City Mall here in Lilongwe in the evening. I was so happy because I had 3 cakes including my boyfriend’s who organised so much presents and send them through a friend from Blantyre city where he stays to Lilongwe. It really added something on my day and am so happy that I am 25 and grateful.
My father and Mother went to be with the Lord at the age of 7 and 8 respectively and I never expected that I will grow up and be like the Woman I am today. For the journey and everything I just want to say, “thank you God because I know everything I have is because of him.”

Some times we think we have whatever we have because of our ability and hard working spirit but it’s just the work of The Almighty God that we are what we are today.  Be Grateful to your life everyday and you will see what God does.

As I said alot has happened in the period of four weeks ,One day I was going to work and I was in a public bus and I saw a mad man behind the Lilongwe bridge who was cooking using the milk tins and eating the stuff that you and I would never eat. Myself and those who were in the bus looked at this man and a voice came out from some old woman saying, “we need to be grateful to God for the clean food we have and we should stop complaining”.

We might not have everything but,the air we breathe, the clean water we drink and all the opportunities that we have had and still having let’s be grateful and thankful to the Almighty.
Stop complaining and count your blessings one by one and look at each day with a blessed heart.

Thank God for Your family not everyone has them, be grateful for your Job because someone is crying to God for that same opportunity, be grateful for your talent, be grateful for today and count your blessings one by one and face the day with a smile that you have had many battles won and you are not afraid anymore.

Chilembwe the Hero!

Every 15th January,  Malawians from all walks of life commemorates John Chilembwe Day, a national holiday and day of remembrance for one of the country’s greatest sons.

There are few figures as revered in the country as this former church pastor who in 1915 revolted against the white colonialists.
For years, the conversation over Chilembwe, who founded the Providence Industrial Mission (PIM) church in Chiladzulo focussed on separating myths and facts from Chilembwe’s legacy. But recently, as the country struggle with under development and poverty, 53 years after Chilembwe’s dream of self-rule was achieved, the debate has changed.
Over Chilembwe day, I overheard an interesting conversation by some young people around town.
One of the young men bitterly complained that Chilembwe rushed his uprising, before the country was ready for self-rule.
“Adah a Chilembwe aja anali aphuma (Chilembwe’s move was rushed)” said one of the young men.
He explained: “He could have waited for colonialists to help this country first in (building) infrastructure and other  developments. Look at how rich South Africa is and we are just in the middle of nowhere as a country while we wait for donors to be fund us.”
I looked at this guy, likely  in his early 20s and asked him what does he know about Chilembwe’s uprising.
He described Chilembwe in his response as “this pastor who was trying to fight with the whites to be a president and got himself killed.”

It’s not a strange for people to punch holes in Chilembwe’s legacy or history.
Some people have criticized Chilembwe for starting the uprising without proper military preparation, citing the fact that it failed.
Increasingly, though, the arguments that is being advanced is that the nation could have benefited from the whites for infrastructure developments.
But the arguments like above are not based entirely on facts.
Such arguments, too, should not be allowed to distract us from the main reasons why we celebrate Chilembwe’s legacy, why he is on the money or deserve to be considered a national hero.
Born in 1871 (he died in 1915), the Baptist trained Pastor had a vision of nationhood way before future anti-colonial fighters came on the scene.
Educated and trained as a minister in the United states of America, he returned to Nyasaland in 1901 to end the near slavery conditions that Malawians were subjected to via the Thangata labour system.
Those conditions were segregation and discrimination of the highest order. They were also humiliating to the victims. They also aimed at discouraging blacks of the idea that they can achieve anything.
History tells us Chilembwe was an early figure in the resistance to colonialism in Nyasaland (Malawi), opposing both the treatment of Africans working in agriculture on European-owned plantations and the colonial government’s failure to promote the social and political advancement of Africans.
Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Chilembwe organized an unsuccessful uprising against colonial rule.
In 1900 Chilembwe returned to Nyasaland, in his own words, “to labour amongst his benighted race”.

Backed financially the National Baptist Convention of America who also provided two American Baptist helpers until 1906, Chilembwe started his Providence Industrial Mission(P.I.M.) in Chiradzulu district and in its first decade, the mission developed slowly, assisted by regular small donations from his American backers, and Chilembwe founded several schools, which by 1912 had 1,000 pupils and 800 adult students.
He preached the values of hard-work, self-respect and self-help to his congregation and, although as early as 1905. He used his church position to deplore the condition of Africans in the protectorate, he initially avoided specific criticism of the government that might be thought subversive.
However, by 1912 or 1913, Chilembwe had become more politically militant and openly voiced criticism over the state of African land rights in the Shire Highlands and of the conditions of labour tenants there, particularly on the A. L. Bruce Estates.
It has also been claimed that Chilembwe preached a form of Millenarianism and that this may have influenced his decision to initiate an armed uprising in 1915.
The whole main reason of his Uprising was to fight for freedom for his people, Africa for Africa. He didn’t like to see his people working in the white’s farm and receive peanuts’, Chilembwe wanted black people to enjoy their rights and be free in their land.
We might not have all the beautiful infrastructures in our country as of now but we can see people speaking their minds dressing the way they want, being in better position without a white a man looking down on us.

We are on the contrary poor and underdeveloped because we have betrayed the genuine spirit of patriotism and self reliance that Chilembwe fought for.
Before we conclude that Chilembwe’s mission failed, let’s remember that all subsequent freedom fighters who followed Chilembwe have cited the pastor as their inspiration.
Chilembwe might have failed militarily but his ideas outlasted him.
The big question now is what have we done with the freedom which Chilembwe longed for?
University of Livistonia political scientists George Phiri argues that whatever position may have, one of Chilembwe’s enviable qualities remains the bravery displayed in the face of the white rule and this was one quality the nation ought to emulate going forward.
Much as everyone is entitled to their opinion, I would still not join the bandwagon in critising Chilembwe.
He did what a leader ought to do. He led by example and did his best with the little resources.
All in all, the life of John Chilembwe is worthy celebrating, as a young person I believe we need people who can act on their dreams and not just talking. There are lessons about courage and sacrifice.

 Last week I was talking to one of my friends and I realized that this year is not different from 2019 or the rest of all the years I have been on earth. What makes it different is the way you will handle whatever comes on your way and how you have planned it.
I have set and jot down my goals and I am ready to go but there is just one thing that always triggers me and I know most of us struggles with Procrastination and you and I need to stand up and fight this disease if we really need change and have good results in this year.

Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished by a certain deadline. It could be further stated as a habitual or intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite knowing it might have negative consequences according to Wikipedia.
So if you had no idea of what procrastination is you now know what you need to shake off. The habit of just changing on your plans, I will do it tomorrow, later or next time. HOMIE SHAKE IT OFF!

Procrastination is a trap that many of us fall into. In fact, according to researcher and speaker Piers Steel , 95 percent of us procrastinate to some degree. While it may be comforting to know that you’re not alone, it can be sobering to realize just how much it can hold you back.

Procastination is often confused with laziness, but they are very different. It is an active process – you choose to do something else instead of the task that you know you should be doing. In contrast, laziness  suggests apathy, inactivity and an unwillingness to act.
Procrastination usually involves ignoring an unpleasant, but likely more important task, in favor of one that is more enjoyable or easier. But giving in to this impulse can have serious consequences. For example, even minor episodes of procrastination can make us feel guilty or ashamed. It can lead to reduced productivity and cause us to miss out on achieving our goals.
If we procrastinate over a long period of time, we can become demotivated and disillusioned with our work, which can lead to depression and even job loss, in extreme cases.

The good thing is there are ways how procrastination can be overcome and do better in our planning and be organized. Below are some of the ways that can help us to overcome procrastination.

1.KEEP A TO DO LIST-This will prevent you from “conveniently” forgetting about those unpleasant or overwhelming tasks.

2.PRIOTISE YOUR TO DO LIST using Eisenhower’s Urgent/Important Principle . This will enable you to quickly identify the activities that you should focus on, as well as the ones you can ignore.

3.BECOME A MASTER OF SCHEDULING AND PROJECT PLANNING.
If you have a big project or multiple projects on the go and you don’t know where to start, these tools can help you to plan your time effectively, and reduce your stress levels.

4.TACLE THE HARDEST TASKS AT YOUR PEAK TIMES
Do you work better in the morning or the afternoon? Identify when you’re most effective, and do the tasks that you find most difficult at these times.

5.SET YOURSELF TIME-BOUND GOALS
Setting yourself specific deadlines to complete tasks will keep you on track to achieve your goals, and will mean that you have no time for procrastination!

6.USE TASKS AND TIME MANAGEMENT APPS
There are numerous apps designed to help you to be more organized, such as Trello and Toggl, for example.
If you’re prone to delaying projects because you find them overwhelming, try breaking them down into more manageable chunks. Organize your projects into smaller tasks and focus on starting them, rather than on finishing them.
